What is Crohn's Disease?

Crohn's is a disease that can have some very life-disrupting symptoms. If you suspect you are having signs of Crohn's, Dr. Ahmed Hasan, Dr. Andrew Schwartz, and Dr. Mahreema Jawairia of Lehigh Gastroenterology Associates in Lehighton, PA provide a full range of services at their practice to treat Crohn's and other GI conditions.

No two people will have exactly the same signs of Crohn's Disease. Some signs are more universal than others, but what you need to remember is that Crohn's can affect any part of the gastrointestinal system from the stomach to the rectum. It can also cause an overreaction in the immune system which affects other parts of the body.

What is Crohn's Disease?

Crohn's Disease is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. That inflammation causes a wide variety of signs and, since these signs are not exclusive to Crohn's Disease, it isn't always easy to diagnose. No two cases will have the same degree of severity either. It runs the complete range from mild to extremely severe. Getting the correct diagnosis of Crohn's is vital to making sure the correct treatment is recommended. The diagnosis of Crohn's may need a colonoscopy or Wireless capsule endoscopy and blood work.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea that comes from Crohn's is not just a one-day wonder. It is uncomfortable, persistent diarrhea that is disruptive to your life. It may also come with abdominal pain and last for more than just a day or a few hours. This is a chronic condition and while it may go into remission, you can have a flare-up without any warning at any time.

Abdominal pain and cramps

Having abdominal pain and cramps doesn't mean you have Crohn's, but it can be a sign that you do have the condition. It is especially worrisome if it is accompanied by any other symptoms including persistent diarrhea, constipation, the urge to empty your bowels frequently, or the sensation of not being able to completely empty your bowels.

Symptoms can also include rectal bleeding or anemia which will need further work up.

Weight loss

If you are losing weight along with any of the other GI symptoms, it may be time to talk to a gastroenterologist about exactly what is going on in your digestive tract. You may think that weight loss is a good thing, but it isn't good if a health issue is causing it and it can mean you are not getting all the nutrition you need for good health. We also have a program for medical weight loss. This is particularly important in people with fatty liver. Weight loss is the only known treatment for NAFLD or fatty liver at present time.

If you notice that your signs seem to be getting worse over time, it is probably time to see a specialist. To get diagnosis and treatment for signs of Crohn's in Lehighton, PA, contact Dr. Hasan, Schwartz, and Dr. Jawairia of Lehigh Gastroenterology Associates by calling the office at (610) 379-0443.
